The People Behind the Scenes
ASHLEY VILJOEN - PRESIDENT
Ashley moved to Canada to attend UBC and is entering her fourth year of Food and Nutritional Health. She decided she wanted to play the trumpet when she was 4, after watching the movie ‘The Aristocats’, and finally at age 7 her mother gave in and signed her up for trumpet lessons. After serving as the band’s logistics officer, she is returning to the exec team as president for 2019-2020. Her favourite part of band is going for bubble tea or ice cream as a group after rehearsal.
JJ HUM - INTERIM DRUM MAJOR
JJ is a fifth year student in the UBC-BCIT Biotechnology program. She enjoys playing various instruments like the piano, ukelele, snare drum, trombone, and sousaphone, but her favourite is auxiliary percussion. For the 2019-2020 term she will be acting as interim drum major, and hopes to teach the band some fun new songs and cadences!
LIA PENNEFATHER - LOGISTICS OFFICER
Lia is a third year computer science student who has been with the band for 2 years. She has also been TMB's treasurer. She is known for her high energy, dance moves and dropping her music during performances.
KATYA HERNANDEZ-POL - INTERIM SECRETARY
Katya is a 3rd-year science student, hiking enthusiast, and fried food lover. She has been playing the trombone in the UBC marching band for the past two years. She's very excited to be filling in the secretary position for 2019 and meeting all the amazing newcomers!
LUIS NOGALES - TREASURER
Luis is a second year Science student. He’s played many instruments including the alto saxophone, bassoon and piano. He really enjoys playing the alto saxophone in TMB and is looking forward to seeing the band grow in the coming year. His favourite part about band is the amazing community of people that are involved in playing and running it. He will be serving his first exec term as treasurer for 2019-2020 and hopes that the next year will be the best yet for the band.
MICHELLE GUO - PUBLICITY OFFICER
Michelle is entering her second year of Commerce. Her musical experience began at the age of 5 where she first learned how to play the piano. A few years later, she learned how to play the alto saxophone, which she now plays in the Thunderbird Marching Band. Michelle’s favourite part about band is getting ice cream after practice or socializing with the other members in general.
